GNU Image Manipulation Program  Is the Linux alternative to Photoshop and in some ways is even superior to it. Some say that there is a steeper learning curve to The Gimp, but since this is what I learned on, Photoshop seems totally alien to me.

Please keep in mind that although The Gimp is cross-platform I am running Ubuntu Linux so there will be some subtle differences in appearance if you are on Windows, however the end result would be the same.

Dumped Windows and Installed Ubuntu 14.04 64bit and KUbuntu 14.04 64bit and this thing rocks!
I have been lagging behind on my own tech chugging along with the old P-4's and Atoms... NO MORE!  This i5 doesn't even break 86 deg F when playing 4 movies across 4 desktops AND boots to my fully functional Unity desktop in only 16 seconds!   and into the fully functional KDE desktop in only 22 seconds!     It lacks USB3.0 , but I can live with that, could always add a PCI card if i need to.

Starting A New Project

I have decided to create a separate Blog for the sake of separating what is real and what is not. Not that furries aren't real, but it just adds a layer of separation between my personal posts and those that are meant purely in jest with my furry friends. While my posts on the new line will be generally clean, I cannot speak for any links or artwork that may be present on other sites that I link to.  At any rate, I am launching my new blog called "The Fur Side" and as it is still being developed please 'bear' with me while I adjust the 'fur' for the right look. ;P

Teaching Basics of The Gimp

I let her pick out the graphic (the black & white part) and showed her how to add transparency and layers or color using The Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program ... cross platform Big Brother to Photo-shop) to create the sticker she wanted to print.

Next I will have to show her how to clean up the relics (off colored areas between the colors) but she did OK for the first attempt.

I have submitted a series of Short Stories to a publisher for consideration for publishing at their request after having submitted a Book that I now have to rework a bit before re-submiting.  Don't look for them under my name, you won't find them as I have them written under a Pen Name. If they actually publish I will be floored to say the least and will at that time release my Pen Name, but until then I'll keep you guessing, if you are not into "Furry Fandom"  it is unlikely you would really care for the stories anyway... they are what they are. Although they are more mild than some stories out there, they are something that most non-furs just don't get. So! I will update the progress when progress is known.

Damn This Weather

Wishing I can get a good stretch of cold weather to really put the new Yukon-Eagle Husky I  furnace through its paces. Been such screwy weather with what seems every couple days sees temperatures back into the 50's and 60's I have to let the wood fire go out and let the oil side take over. The oil system is working great!  

I know, careful what you wish for, but hey, I'm ready to burn some wood and save money by not having to buy any more oil!

I added in the two small registers one on the return and one on the supply. Placing my incense burner near the return side pushes the scent through the entire house instantly. >__<

I need to make up a new ash attachment for the vacuum though, the tray I had in front of my old furnace simply does not fit this one.

Facebook Messenger Is Back In Pidgin!

Earlier This Year ...

Facebook shut down their XMPP service and because of this, Pidgin/libpurple no longer supports Facebook Chat. For those of you who want to use Facebook Chat in Pidgin, there is now a new plugin which makes it possible once again, called purple-facebook.

Install purple-facebook in Ubuntu, Linux Mint and their derivatives

You can use its official repository. To add the repository and install the plugin, use the following commands in the Linux Terminal:

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jgeboski/xUbuntu_$(lsb_release -rs)/ /' >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/jgeboski.list"

cd /tmp && wget http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/jgeboski/xUbuntu_$(lsb_release -rs)/Release.key

sudo apt-key add - < Release.key  

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install purple-facebook

If you don't want to add the PPA, you can download the DEB from HERE (but you won'treceive any updates unless you add the repository).


Once installed, add a new account in Pidgin (Accounts > Manage Accounts > Add) and in the Protocol dropdown, select "Facebook" (important: NOT "Facebook (XMPP)") in the username field, you can enter either your email, your Facebook username or phone number associated with your Facebook account.

60 or so years ago they broke through the wall into the cistern to put in a proper pump and water heater, and they never actually finished the job.

It's a pain in the butt cutting the blocks to fit into the old stone wall but it's getting there.

The part I thought would be the worst was actually the easiest, except for the weight of the 3 inch thick, 10 foot long 12 inch wide Popple planks (about 200 lbs each), they actually went in much easier than doing the concrete work.  Of course due to a large stone on one corner that couldn't be moved the last plank had to be coped in, even that wasn't too bad.

Now I'm ready to throw wood down for the Winter, without having to worry about the concrete getting broke up again.  The Popple planks will hold up to the pounding for a good many years.

The fold up protection for the stairs was all ready in place for a couple years, I just added the hinged extension to cover the concrete between the bottom of the stairs and the planks.

Although it is not something you would sit and drink more than a couple at a time. This tastes exactly like root-beer and you really can't taste the alcohol at all (which could be a very bad thing).

Locally I have found it in Walmart, though there are some supermarkets that get it in from time to time as well. Some areas downstate can't keep it on the shelf and are nearly selling it of the truck.It makes one hell of a root-beer float! Look it up ... Small Town Brewery

 I can now rest a little easier knowing that my new furnace will  perform well enough to keep the house warm. Having had the oil burner running for the past couple days and now with a wood fire over the last night. All has performed as it should and couldn't get any easier.

Load the firebox, turn up the oil burner for about 3 or 4 minutes and "Presto" the wood fire takes over. No need for matches, lighters, papers, or any other type of accelerator to get the fire started.

Adobe Flash Player is a thing of the past in the Ubuntu community, and you should remove it from your computer if you haven't all ready. There are two alternatives that are current and for as long as I have been using them, work equally as well ... Lightspark and Gnash. If you haven't all ready dumped Adobe Flash simply open a terminal [Ctrl] [Alt] ”T” and enter the following line and hit enter:

sudo apt-get purge adobe-flashplugin

it will ask you for your password, type it in and hit enter, then enter again to confirm the removal. I like to err on the side of preventing further issues so after the prompt returns type the following line and hit enter:

sudo apt-get purge adobe-flashplugin-installer

this will insure that the defunct and vulnerable piece of software will never happen to find its way back to your browser.

For those running Ubuntu 14.04 (the current long-term support release of Ubuntu) if you have Universe repository enabled Gnash is available through the Ubuntu Software Center or you can download the .deb package from ubuntuupdates.org making sure you download the correct architecture for your system.

Gnash is the Preferred replacement for Flash in Ubuntu but many find that Lightspark has a couple features that are beyond what gnash has … so I have installed them both and can toggle them as needed in the browsers add-ons manager, although so far Gnash is really the one doing all the grunt work.

Again for those running Ubuntu 14.04 if you have the Universe repository enabled it is available through the Ubuntu Software Center. Alternately you can download the .deb package from ubuntuupdates.org.

The Migration to Windows 10

Have you made the journey?

Well, I went through the upgrade process a few days ago, and to give Microsoft credit where it's due, the entire process went without any problems what so ever.

Windows 10 looks to be a decent choice for the last big upgrade to what Microsoft says will be its final major release.

I would however advise a serious moment of pause before jumping on the upgrade wagon... 

The PC I did the upgrade on I use for a telephone filtering (getting rid of unwanted out-of-area- calls and the robo-calls that telemarketers use) to quell the constant daily ringing of the cursed thing.  To my dismay the hardware / software involved didn't seem to play well with Windows 10. Unfortunately after several hours of trying to coax things into functioning properly, and the need to have the system function as it should, there was no choice but to roll back to Windows 7 Ultimate. Again where credit is due, the process was rather quick and did not break anything in the process. I was back up and running on Win 7 in only about 20 minutes, with everything working as it was before the whole switch.

Now my dilemma, now that I have upgraded and rolled back again all ready, has Microsoft's offer for the free upgrade been rescinded? or will they give another chance to those few who might run into an issue like mine, to upgrade again after support for the hardware / software has been fixed?

I have a strange gut feeling that any hope for an upgrade now for that machine would have to require a purchase of the Windows 10 system ... in that case I guess I will remain with Windows 7 on that machine for the remainder of its life.

It's Always Your Equipment At Fault

for problems you are having with their service.

When I call to report an issue the go through the regular routine of rebooting the modem, and the router, and the PC... and on ...

we get to the point they ask what router you are using and you tell them, they realized that it is NOT one of the ones they supply and immediately they take the attitude that that is the reason for your problems and they can't assist you any further without access from their end. THAT IS BUNK!

Not that everyone knows their networking equipment as well as I do because I work with it every day and I understand the symptoms of when things are right and when they are not. I just wish they had a way to skip past the basic troubleshooters so the more knowledgeable callers can get to a more knowledgeable tech sooner, it is so aggravating to have to jump the hoops and listen to how it's all because of your equipment even though you are certain that it is not. 

HEY VERIZON! IS THIS ACCEPTABLE SERVICE OVER 25 DAYS!

Total loss of DSL signal 94 times over a 25 day period, yeah, I sent Verizon a hard copy so I didn't have to talk to the nitwits you have to go through to get to someone that can actually trouble-shoot the real issue.
