Learning Linux

It can't be too difficult...

My daughter, now 7, has surprised me in a few different ways recently on my computer... there is no doubt that she has picked up quite easily how to get around the Ubuntu system. Several times now after she has been on the computer I have had to "re-set" some settings that she has changed while goofing around with her on-line games.
Don't get me wrong... I am very pleased that she has grown up with an open source Operating System rather than a restricted OS like Windows.... But... I guess it is time to create her own account login so she will stop "altering" mine. :P
I can only hope that her interest in Linux does not fall when she has to be subjected to Windows in school... I certainly hope she doesn't take Windows too seriously anyway.

Directly In Front Of You

Wallch 3.6 Running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

The new version of Wallch has wallpaper clocks available for installation. It is a really great idea and one I was looking forward to giving a spin. The choices are limited (although I expect that as more people start playing around with it there will be more to choose from). These particular ones struck my fancy... I like it.

Isn't it human nature though... I still find myself looking up to the right hand corner of the dock to see what time it is!   LOL.

Hats off the the Wallch crew for a fine job!

Google Drive

Thanks to the guys at NoobsLab

Ubuntu 12.04 now has a Google Drive app that works flawlessly. Grive is an unofficial app which only supports Ubuntu 12.10 and newer but it works great following the steps here at the NoobsLab site for those running Ubuntu 12.04 Precise.

You can visit The Fan Club who has put the package together and if you are running 12.10 or newer their site is all you need.

To install Grive & Grive-Tools in Ubuntu 12.04 32Bit Precise/Linux Mint 13 open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

After installation in Ubuntu 12.04/its derivatives open terminal and type sudo grive-setup to configure Google Drive account for Grive.
That's it

This is not the current release of Grive as the current build will not work on 32Bit systems due to dependency issues. This should be fixed in future releases.

Winter

I am so ready for the end of Winter.

I remember much worse Winters when I was growing up in the 70's... and one particular thing sticks in my mind... The road crew was really on top of the game back then. School delays were not seen by the Highway Superintendent as an excuse to let the crew wander in a couple hours later to work, they were out clearing the roads even earlier to be sure they had their plows and equipment back off the roads BEFORE the School Buses had to get out onto them. I guess the difference now is that the Superintendent would rather be a friend to a few... than respected by many. As it seems with the rest of the country nowadays, good leadership & respect are things that are not found much at all any more, its just another aspect showing the growing failure of the countries infrastructure.

My Brother

MFC-J425W

I really like my Brother all-in-one printer/copier/fax machines, they have some of the cheapest Ink replacement costs on the market today.
If you couple these dependable machines with a Continuous Ink System from CISinks, you simply cannot beat the price for ink.

Refilling is as simple as pouring the ink into the tanks.

However, these printers fall short in the Photo paper handling department... the heavier papers simply do not feed well.  The good news is CISinks has kits for many other printer models and brands as well.

Ice Palace 2014

It was a beautiful day in Saranac today... and the way the weather is going the Ice Palace should be safe for quite a while.

It must take a long time for all that ice to melt.

Look For The Best

If you are going the way of Small and Power saving design... be wary of what you are buying and look for the best.

I am very pleased with the performance of the Intel Atom Processors as found in my Asus eeepc.
Fortunately, with my knowledge of computers, however, I know what to look for to get the best "bang for my buck".

The Intel Atom D2700 (known as Cedarview) which has a clock speed of 2.13GHz has been up until now, my favourite of the Atom family of Processors.
Combined with the Next Generation of NVidia Ion graphics... you couldn't go wrong for a rock-solid performing PC for general and HTPC use. It was far superior to its Intel based graphics cousin... in fact, I wouldn't recommend any Intel based graphics units for any use, I simply have had absolutely NO-LUCK with any of the Intel Graphics available to date.

Unfortunately, good things never last! Intel has dropped the D2700 and has remained with the D2500 series which are fine... but for myself (harkening back to the days of the Pentium 4 Cedarmill) I simply have a fondness to the D2700.
A dual-core with Hyper-Threading (effectively a 4-core processor) coupled with the Ion graphics makes for a rippin little power-saver equally at home for every day use or to power a home entertainment system delivering full 1080p video to your flat screen.

This delivers good performance running Windows 7... but even better running Ubuntu. I am currently running Ubuntu 12.04 on mine along with XBMC it makes a kicka** system that excels at everything you throw at it.

Anyone looking for a budget build that can handle the demands of every-day use as well as the demand for 1080p streaming... this is your diamond if you can find one.
