Setting-Up The Raspberry Pi Part 2
Now with all the parts gathered up,
an output of at least 750ma. Some cell phone
chargers can be just the ticket. The ones that
utilize a USB cable can increase the options
for powering the Pi. Hint: most modern TV's have USB ports!
A remote control is a great way to interface with your Pi. There are many remotes available that function with the PI and XBMC ranging in price from $4 or $5 US to $39 or more. I spent about $6 US on this one on Amazon.
Although in most cases the Pi will become a
semi-permanent fixture attached to your TV, by going wireless it will certainly leave your options open as to placement. One less ugly wire to contend with in that mass behind the entertainment center right? I picked up this nano adapter for a mere $12 US.
Don't forget this one, the HDMI cable to connect to your TV. The placement of your Pi will dictate the length of the cable you will need to purchase. I opted for a 3 meter cable, although I believe a 2 meter cable would have been enough. I want to make sure I can keep the Pi away from any heat being generated by the rest of my entertainment system.
To keep fingers and such off the actual components of the Pi a case should be utilized. There are a wide variety of cases made for the Pi and range in price from a couple dollars up.
The folks a NOOBS have a super easy way to install the OS on your Raspberry Pi. The download page here.
I questioned the fact that there are heat sinks on the market for the Pi chips and if they are needed and the reply to that question was found here from the team at Raspberry Pi, and the answer was "If you are using your RasPi within the normal use the foundation foresaw for the device YOU DO NOT NEED Heat Sinks for your RasPi."

Once you have your Pi up and running you can enjoy all your network storage has to offer at full 1080P and digital sound. (if your TV supports it).

Always On The Lookout
For That Next Special Wallpaper
Having watched Guardians of the Galaxy a number of times now, and taken some still shots I have one of my new favorites from the Movie. Rocket is perhaps one of my favorite characters to come along in many years and as the shot is taken from a full 1080P HD movie it makes for a visually appealing desktop wallpaper. Marvel has done a wonderful job with this movie!

My First Video Post
Bear with me ;P
Please keep in mind that you need a WiFi capable computer (built-in or usb adapter) and an active wired connection in order to do this.

What A Wonderful App For The Unity Desktop
Unity Launcher Folders
A very easy way to group apps or internet links together in specific drawers in the launcher.
I have looked for something like this ever since Unity made its debut in Ubuntu. This is a great app that I cannot recommend enough for those wanting to clean up the launcher a bit. Check it out at the Unity-Launcher-Folders website.

Giving Windows 10 A Test Drive
I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview
On my Foxconn Nettop PC with the Intel Atom and so far it is doing quite well. As this is a technical preview there are a lot of abilities that are simply not in place yet, such as DVD playback, Media Center, and a few others that some may not want to do without, those with touch screens may want to shy away at the time being.
Over all my initial feeling with Windows 10 is that this will be much better than the beleaguered Windows 8 (or 8.1). The awful start page is history although the basic idea is retained in the Start Menu which rests back in its proper place in the lower left hand corner. To make use of Windows Mail your account must have IMAP capabilities, POP is not supported.
If you would like to give it a go you can head over to Microsoft and download the .iso for yourself.
I strongly recommend that you DO NOT install this on a computer that you wish to use on a daily basis nor should you choose to up-grade from an existing installation of another version of Windows. It is not yet determined how well this system plays with others as far as dual booting. It is simply best to allow it to be solely installed on one computer for trial purposes.
The Windows App Store will bring more secure way of finding software that is designed to work with the system and will also bring more of a Linux feel as well. It mirrors the long tradition of many Linux distributions own software repositories, such as Ubuntu's Software Center.
As has been proven by the Linux community, this centralized location for approved software, as long as it is properly maintained, should drastically cut down on the inadvertent installation of malware from third parties.
As time allows I will continue to put the New Windows 10 through its paces and provide any important info that I may come across. If I can save someone else from doing something stupid by doing it myself ... well, you know where that is going.

OWCH!
Rumors are true.
I have been laid-up the last week on my couch nursing a dislocated and broken ankle. Open reduction surgery was done and now I am looking forward to getting the staples removed tomorrow at the Doctors office. With any luck I will be a bit more mobile this week and will be able to get back into the shop to bring in some more repairs.

Performance and Style
WD My Passport Ultra Metal Edition 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive WDBTYH0010BBA-NESN Navy
The case is very nice and being made of aluminum I would suspect it would help keep the drive running at a cooler temperature better than a plastic case would, although during all my torture the drive temps never showed any signs for concern. Although I dislike having to install proprietary software on my PC, the WD Smartware is a very easy to understand software and installed and even updated to the current version without a hitch on my Windows 7 Ultimate box, alas as is usually the case there is no direct Linux support. The ability to include your dropbox account is a nice touch although there are other services out there that offer much better plans (10 to 20GB) for free as well. Hardware encryption could be a plus to some, especially if you are the type that drag this thing around with you wherever you go. For the normal Joe that leaves it sitting at home as a Backup destination leaves little use for it IMO.
The Pro software provides licensing to three computers. Data transfer rates seem to be on mark with what you should expect from USB3.0 I was able to transfer a 1.1GB file to the device in just over 30 seconds. Transferring files from a second USB3.0 device saw rates of 70 to 72 MB/s for a sustained period of time and the drives never seemed to get any warmer than about 105DegF
On a side note for those that use and maintain OpenSource computers, this drive does work equally well on Linux systems especially once you ditch all the proprietary software from its internals, which will also see the recovery of disk space so you actually get a near 1TB (993GB) amount of room.
Overall I am quite happy with the performance aspect of the drive, and would recommend it to those looking for a simple option for backing up their PC that runs Mac or Windows. I would equally recommend it to those running Linux as long as they want to deal with a total delete and reformat of the drive prior to use.
Not exactly sure of why one would want (or is that need) to back up the files on the cloud? If the cloud servers mess things up you still have the files on your computer, if your computer messes up you still have the files in the cloud, and/or on your other devices that are synced with it.

Setting Up The Raspberry Pi
This will be the first of a series of posts I will upload as I Setup my Raspberry Pi Home Theater PC.
I opted for the B+ model which is available at on-line stores for around $38 US. Don't forget that you will need a Micro SD card of at least a class 4 for the installation of the operating system, I was able to order this 32GB class 10 combo for $24.
Received The Raspberry

The Pi comes with an HDMI connection which provides full 1080p and digital audio for your HDTV and sound system.
Power is much simpler than you might expect, most people might not even have to purchase a power supply as they could have one in their possession all ready, as I did. It happens to be nothing more than an old cellphone charger I had kicking around the shop that uses the mini USB connection, and supplies a minimum of 750ma at 5 - 5.2 VDC.
The Pi is about the size of a credit card
So at this point I actually have a fully operational micro PC that can deliver movies and sound to my Home Theater system for around $62. Of course now one should figure out how to enclose the device for protection / aesthetics. Now to work on how I want to accomplish that.

Shop Work
As is usually the case ...
Now that I have everything moved into my shop and arranged the way I want it, I have decided to start putting a proper wall covering up, I am getting sick of looking at insulation all the time.
Yep, I know, wainscoting is traditionally placed vertically. Well, I never claimed to be a die-hard traditionalist, I like it this way! It will look much better once I get the oil on it.

Grub Not Found...
...An Easy Fix
Ubuntu uses the
GRUB2 boot loader/manager and has since version 9.10 If you like to
play around with the most recent Linux Distro's, as I do, then you
may from time to time have a need to re-install the GRUB2 boot loader.
It is quite simple to do, all you need is a live CD/DVD of a Ubuntu
release 9.10 or newer... or for that matter any live disk that uses
GRUB2 boot loader.
Fire up the terminal
once the disk finishes loading (Ctrl,
Alt + T) and enter the following commands:
I) Lets find the
specifics as to where Ubuntu is installed on your Hard Disk:
sudo fdisk -l
(the return from
this command should look something like this)
Device Boot
Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 *
2048 167456767 83727360 83 Linux
/dev/sda2
167458814 234440703 33490945 5 Extended
/dev/sda5
226107392 234440703 4166656 82 Linux swap / Solaris
As you can see
above, my Ubuntu partition is /dev/sda1 (it has the asterisk
under Boot).
II) Armed with this
information, we can now mount the Ubuntu partition:
sudo mount
/dev/sda1 /mnt
III) Now we can install the
GRUB2 boot loader:
sudo grub-install
- -root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
NOTE: That's
/dev/sda – the hard disk itself, NOT the Ubuntu partition
/dev/sda1.
IV) Unmount the
Ubuntu partition:
sudo umount
/dev/sda1
V) If you have more
than one OS installed, re-detect OS's like so:
sudo update-grub
VI) Restart the computer:
sudo reboot
That's it! You will now be greeted by the familiar GNU GRUB boot menu.

Honor
As an ex Navy man I fully believe that in all the world there is no greater way to honor your country than by giving your life in its defense. In the USA, the members of the US Armed Forces are the leading edge of our defense across the globe and know all too well the consequences they place themselves in front of for that reason. Along with the Armed forces, on the Home-front are the Men and Women of the Emergency Services who place themselves in harms way every day, to help their brothers and sisters in need when disaster strikes. The many passers-by who without thought offer help in extreme situations are also none the less to be recognized for their heroism as well.
I stand, salute and offer a moment of silence in prayer to all of those heroes who gave their all in an effort to help thousands of their brothers and sisters 13 years ago today, to honor them and the memories of all who lost their lives on that tragic day.
“Without compassion... society fails.”

Since Summer School ended
I have a trip to Saranac Lake and then on to Lake Placid tomorrow afternoon. As the leaves are just beginning to turn colors here I would imagine that up in the mountains they will be nearly at their peak.

Accuracy?
Facts are Facts
I don't understand it... but it seems to be that most reporters / news agencies don't take accuracy on locations too seriously when it comes to reporting Rural news.I am totally thrilled that the Perps that kidnapped the two local Amish Girls were caught... they are now where they deserve to be and hopefully get what they deserve to get.
On to correct the location of the events...
There is a large difference between the Hamlet of Oswegatchie, located in the Town of Fine (RED DOT) and the Town of Oswegatchie where the Amish family lives, just south of Heuvelton (BLUE DOT). Why is it that so many are so confused between towns and Hamlets. The Hamlet of Richville where they were found is in the Town of DeKalb only 16 miles south from their home on US Rt 11 with absolutely no connection with the Town of Fine.

Great Idea... But...
Tile draining a field to increase crop yields is a great idea...
But forgetting one little detail...
But forgetting one little detail...
Even in the middle of a field...
Can ruin a lot of people's day...
No internet for over 12 hours yesterday, as luck had it I was away to Tupper Lake for the most of it anyway... but jeez! Bet that was an expensive fix for the farmer.

COOL
A/C in the shop that is...
Yes, putting it in the wall was a planned event. I hate taking an ac in and out with the weather when only a fan is needed. This way in the fall I can take it out and winterize and can put it back in the spring, thus only handling it twice a year instead of multiple times. On a cooler day I can turn it off and open the windows.

Cheap and Viable Computing
Deals are out there!
A friend of mine was at a garage sale the other day and came across a gem in the rough... so to speak.
Although an older model with an AMD Sempron CPU... it had the good fortune of having the Nvidia Graphics. A good cleaning and the addition of a second 512MB stick of ram and this machine was ready for new life with a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04LTS Trusty Tahr. With the use of Nvidia's Graphics driver this is now a fully capable home use PC. For the $10 my friend gave for the computer (which included a 24" Acer monitor, keyboard and wireless mouse) and $5 for a used 512MB stick... he has all the computer he needs for home to deal with e-mail, web browsing, and the occasional movie.
Thanks to the light footprint of the Ubuntu system, XBMC runs smoothly and plays movies full screen without a hitch.
My friend is pleased with the results, and even more pleased that he got it all for a total of only $15....!
The deals are out there if you know what to look for, being in the right place at the right time is the trick.

Deep Fried Oreo's
The easy way.
First put one package of Oreo's (of your preference peanut butter ones work great) in the freezer over night.
then using Bisquick make up a batch of Pancake batter. A two cup batch will do 24 to 28 Oreo's.
Then get the deep fryer out and warmed up to 350 - 375
Dip frozen Oreo's into the pancake batter and place into the fryer 4 or five at a time flipping over after about 30 seconds then removing after about 30 seconds more. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or dip in cool-whip.
